Today marks two great commemorations. As a young nation fighting for independence, the Continental Congress created the U.S. Army 237 years ago and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson set aside this day as Flag Day. Forty years later, President Dwight Eisenhower signed Joint Resolution (Public Law 396) adding the phrase “One Nation Under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
As we join together as a nation to proudly fly Old Glory and salute the Army’s 237th birthday, let’s remember that it is the ideals, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, which Old Glory represents and our U.S. military defends daily. We are truly a blessed nation under God and will continue to be a blessed nation as long as we remember and give thanks and praise to the Almighty.
